Harold Douglas Obituary

DALTON - Harold L. "Henry" Douglas, 88, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2018. Born in Dalton on January 30, 1930, to the late Lee H. and Edna C. (Moser) Douglas, he was a lifelong resident of Dalton. He was a graduate of the College of Wooster and a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving stateside during the Korean Conflict. He was the self-employed owner of Douglas Insurance Agency in Dalton, having purchased the business from his father and later selling it to his son and current owner Larry.

Harold was an elder of the Dalton United Presbyterian Church and later a member of the Dalton United Methodist Church where he served as Treasurer. He and wife Hazeljean were loving foster parents to newborns through Wayne County Children Services. A loyal advocate of Dalton, he was active in many community organizations. He was a member of the Dalton Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also a member of the Dalton Chamber of Commerce, Dalton Community Days, Dalton Holidays Festival Committee, Dalton Cemetery Board, Dalton YWCA Advisory Board, Dalton Auditorium Fund Committee and Citizens Review Committee of the United Way of Wayne and Holmes County.  He volunteered for Meals on Wheels and was a Dalton Music Booster. An avid Dalton High School Athletic Booster, he attended every DHS football and basketball game for more than five decades. As a member of the Plymouth Club, Harold and Hazeljean enjoyed traveling to regional car shows and parades in their powder blue 1954 Plymouth Belvedere convertible with their slogan "Original Car -Original Owner-Original Wife--All Unrestored!"

Preceded in death by Hazeljean, his wife of 62 years, Harold is survived by a sister, Vivian Smith (David) of Falls Church, VA, and a brother, John (Rose) Douglas of Boerne, TX.  He is also survived by daughters Geri Lou Douglas (Don) Marshall of Akron, Connie (Craig) McFarren of Pace, FL, Wendy Douglas-Zimmerman (Bob) of Marshallville, a son, Larry (Annie) Douglas of Dalton, five grandchildren and two great grandsons.

Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at 11 a.m. at the Dalton United Methodist Church, 204 W. Main St., Dalton 44618 with Pastor Dave Martin and Pastor Sally Fusek, co-officiating. Burial to take place at Dalton Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Zak-Thacker & Monbarren Funeral Home, 29 E. Main St., Dalton and one hour prior to service time at the church on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Dalton United Methodist Church or the Dalton Rotary Club, PO Box 285, Dalton, OH 44618.
