DALTON - Russell John Gerber, age 84 of Dalton, passed away on November 16, 2017 at Wooster Community Hospital.

Russell was born on April 25, 1933 to Andrew and Della (Beck) Gerber and was raised by Joel and Martha (Gerber) Zuercher, they precede him in death.  He was a life resident of Dalton, graduating from Dalton High School in 1952 and married his high school sweetheart, Gwendolyn (Graber) Gerber on November 6, 1953, celebrating 64 years together. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he received a Purple Heart after serving as a medic during the Korean Conflict. Russell owned and operated the M & M Oil Company in Dalton as a fuel distributor.  He was a sports enthusiast, playing football, basketball, softball, tennis and golf through the years. 

He is survived by wife, Gwen; son, Brian (Mary) Gerber of Valdosta, GA; daughter in-law, Kathy Gerber of Dalton; grandchildren, Allison (Brian) Lintern, Michael (Tiffany) Gerber, Matthew Gerber, Catherine Gerber and Will Gerber; great grandchildren, Gavin Lintern, Nolen Gerber and Stella Gerber; sister, Odulla Cenis; sister in-law, Donna Zuercher; half-brother, Roger Gerber; half-sister, Edna Finch; other family and friends.

Russell is preceded in death by his son, Kevin; brothers, Lloyd Gerber, Lester Gerber, Andrew (Jr) Gerber, George Zuercher, Lloyd Zuercher, Kenneth Zuercher; sisters, Effie Painter, Anne Burger, Sylvia Hager, Barbara Wilson, Irene Peeples, Helen Miller; and Martha Stevic.

Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the Zak-Thacker & Monbarren Funeral Home, 29 E. Main St., Dalton 44618 with Pastor Tim Hull, officiating.  Burial with military honors will take place at Dalton Cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Monday from 5-7 p.m. and one hour prior to service time on Tuesday.  Online obituary and guest registry are available at www.zakmonbarrenfh.com
