Velma J. Schumacher, age 90 of Dalton, went home to be with her Heavenly Lord and husband Don B. Schumacher on Sunday, March 12, 2017. She was a resident of Shady Lawn Health Care for the last 3 months.
Velma was born near Dalton on October 27, 1926 to the late Jacob and Julia (Schneider) Hasseman and married Don Schumacher on May 3, 1947. He preceded her in death on June 29, 2005. She lived in the Dalton area her entire life.
She worked at the Dalton Equity and Producers Live Stock as a bookkeeper. She was a member of the Dalton Presbyterian Church and served as Elder and Moderator of the Women’s Association, and active in the former Dalton VFW Auxiliary and served as President. She volunteered at the Red Cross Blood Drives, served on the Election Board for many years, and was an active Cub Scout Den Mother.
She was an active homemaker and great baker, loved gardening and flowers, and enjoyed attending all Dalton Bulldog sporting events until health did not permit. She dearly loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Surviving are children, John (Barb) Schumacher of Seville, Janey (Gary) Still of Wooster; grandchildren, Matt (Kara) Schumacher, Kelli (Jeremiah) Webb, Tyler Still (Corri Musselman); great grandchildren, Eli and Noah Schumacher and Branham Webb; many nieces and nephews.
She is also preceded in death by her sisters, Florence (Lloyd) Zurcher and Gladys (Wallace) Aker; brother, Russel (Hilda) Hasseman; brother and sister in-laws, Urie (Florence) Schumacher and Mildred (Floyd) Dymond; half-brother, Robert Geiger; half-sister, Shirley Geiger.
The family wishes to thank all the caregivers at Shady Lawn for their attentive and loving care.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, March 17, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the Dalton Presbyterian Church, 163 W. Main St., Dalton, 44618 with Pastor Sally Fusek, officiating. Burial to take place at Dalton Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the Zak-Thacker & Monbarren Funeral Home, 29 E. Main St., Dalton and one hour prior to service time on Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dalton Presbyterian Church, PO Box 306, Dalton, OH 44618.
