C. Randall "Randy" McConnell Obituary

ORRVILLE – C. Randall “Randy” McConnell, age 71, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on May 17, 2024.

Born on June 30, 1952 in Indianapolis, IN to the late John and Anna Jo (Whalen) McConnell, he was a lifelong resident of Orrville.  A graduate of Staunton Military Academy and obtaining his bachelor’s degree in political science from Fayetteville State in NC, he was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army.  Randy served as an 82nd Airborne Infantryman, Military Police Officer and Operations Sergeant in Operation Desert Storm.  During his military career, he received many awards and commendations including “Soldier of the Year”.  He had been a Summit County Sherriff Deputy for 8 years and then became a security officer for the First Energy Nuclear Division.  Randy attended the Massillon Baptist Temple and was a member of the Orrville American Legion Post#282.  He loved to work in his yard and study history.  An avid fan of all the Ohio sports teams, Randy especially enjoyed spending time with his family and watching his grandchildren grow.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Steven McConnell; sister, Cindy Watson; stepfathers, Robert Holt and Clarence Miller.  He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Betty; children, Chris (Andi) McConnell of Orrville, Michelle McConnell (fiancé, Jeff Rhodes) of Canal Fulton, Melissa McConnell of Ridgeley, WV, Melinda (Shannon) Fogle of Mansfield, Miranda McConnell-Casto of Wooster; 14 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; brother, Mike (Joanna) McConnell of Hampstead, NH; brother-in-law, Walter Watson of AZ; numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

Funeral service will be on Friday, May 24, 2024 at 10 a.m. at Zak-Thacker & Monbarren Funeral Home, 132 N. Portage St., Doylestown, OH, 44230 with Pastor Tom Ledford, officiating.  Calling hours will be Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m.  Burial with military honors will follow at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Blvd., Staten Island, NY, 10306.  Online obituary and guest registry are available at www.zakmonbarrenfh.com
