Charlene "Hap" S. Gessling

DALTON – Charlene Sue Gessling, 76, went to heaven at the Cleveland Clinic on November 10, 2022 after a brief illness. She was known to everyone as Hap.

Charlene was born to Herbert and Helen (Shilling) Klever on November 16, 1945 and married her first love, Jerry Dale Amstutz on July 1, 1967. He passed away on September 22, 1974. After raising their son, Jerry Walter, she married Thomas Gessling on February 23, 1991. He passed away December 23, 2021.

Hap worked at Foodways and various other jobs many years before becoming a homemaker, where she developed her immaculate housekeeping skills. She enjoyed camping at Lake Wapusun where she met and loved many lifetime friends. Shopping at discount stores and welcoming friends to her porch for a beverage was also a great enjoyment. She wasn’t afraid to tell anyone when it was time to go home. If you were a guest at her house, you would also recognize her love for gnomes in all shapes and sizes and her love for decorating for the holidays. Hap enjoyed growing vegetables to make her tomato and cucumber salads and was also known for her baked beans, wilted lettuce, and Grandma Honey noodles. Spaghetti socials and steak dinners with family were some of her favorite times.

In addition to her son Jerry (Susan) Amstutz of Dalton, she is survived by her 3 grandchildren, Hayden (Hannah) Amstutz of Virginia, Landry and Ashley Amstutz of Dalton, whom were her greatest treasurers and knew her as Nea Nea; brother, Herbert Klever of North Lawrence; many nieces and nephews, who lovingly called her Aunt Bea, and very special friends still survive.  She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 husbands, and sisters, Joan Flickinger of Wooster, and Polly Butzer of North Lawrence.

The family will receive friends on Friday, November 18, 2022, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Zak-Thacker & Monbarren Funeral Home, 29 E.
