DALTON – David J. Menges Sr., age 87, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2023 surrounded by family.
Born on February 28, 1936 in Dover, OH to the late John C. and Frances T. (Waldick) Menges, Dave was a 1954 graduate of Dover High School and went on to obtain his Bachelor’s Degree from Kent State University in 1963. He retired from the U.S Social Security Administration and had worked for Greer Steel in Dover during his high school years, and also Fox Nursery. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a resident of Dalton for 30 years, previously of Wellsville, OH. Dave was a member and elder of the Dalton Presbyterian Church and also Cedar Lodge #430 F&AM in Orrville, The Dalton Community Historical Society, and was a member and treasurer of NARFE. He presided as Mayor of Dalton from 1993 until 1995 and enjoyed being a taste tester for the J.M. Smucker Co.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Veronica “Vickie”; sons, David Jr. (Judy) of Cambridge, OH, Ron (Kara) of Freeport, OH, Mike (Stephanie) of Bethesda, OH; grandchildren, John, Kaitlyn (Caleb) Baker, Kelsey, Mariah (Ray) Lynn, Lane (Lindsay), Luke, Lauryn; great grandchildren, Marcus, Troy, Vincent, Allis, and one on the way; brothers-in-law, Marty (Karla) Wilson, Terry (Elsie) Wilson; sisters-in-law, Lonnie Wilson, Margo (Larry) Huff; other family and friends. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Anna Lou (Raymond) Giles; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Joe (Zoe) Wilson.
Dave enjoyed fishing with his buddies, hunting, going to the beach with family, the outdoors, taking care of his yard, family and reading, especially about American history , WWII and the Civil War. He also had great enjoyment in his trips with sons and grandsons to Canada fishing and Gettysburg, PA. Dave will be missed by numerous family and friends.
Funeral service will be on Saturday, October 14, 2023 at 11 a.m. at the Dalton Presbyterian Church, 163 W. Main St., Dalton, OH, 44618 with Pastor Sally Fusek, officiating. A burial with military honors will take place at Dalton Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Zak-Thacker & Monbarren Funeral Home, 29 E. Main St., Dalton, OH, 44618 and one hour prior to service time at the church on Saturday.
