Doris Ryder Obituary

Doris Jane Ryder, age 92, formerly of Dalton, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 6, 2022. She was born December 3, 1929 in Mt. Pleasant, PA, to Harry J. and Ruth (Nicklow) Greenawalt. Doris was a graduate of Northwest High School in Canal Fulton where she met the love of her life, Warren S. Ryder. They were married November 15, 1947 and raised seven children together, all of whom survive.

Warren and Doris made their life in Dalton, where they were members of Cornerstone Community Church and where their kindness and generosity touched the lives of many. They gave of their time and resources and opened their home without question to those in need. They forged deep friendships and demonstrated to their children that faith and fellowship transcend racial and cultural differences. A gift to their family, they modeled how to seek the Lord with your whole heart.

For Doris, church and family were everything. Endlessly devoted to her children, she served as room mother, volunteered for the PTA and the Band Parents Association and attended countless games, performances and school events. She ensured her children knew how deeply they were loved and made each feel special, a practice she continued with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She gave of her talents, cooking and baking for church meals and delivering food to the sick. Her sourdough and Italian breads were legendary, and a trip to grandma’s was never complete without homemade sweet rolls from her freezer.

She loved hymns and poetry. No matter what she did, she did it to the hum of a favorite hymn. She filled a room with contagious joy and love and will be so greatly missed. "Even so, it is well with my soul."

Doris was preceded in death by her beloved husband and parents, grandson Michael Oswald, sister Beatrice Boak and son-in-law Steven Larson. She is survived by children Warren Stanley, Jr. (Connie) of Canton, Susan (Gregory) Oswald of Millersburg, James (Judy) Ryder of Massillon, Janee Larson of North Canton, Timothy (Cindy) Ryder of Dalton, Barbara (Ed) Moore of Massillon, Thomas (Brenda) Ryder of Dalton, and daughter-in-law, Mary Ryder of Wadsworth; brother William Greenawalt, Sr. of Green and sister Carolyn Turner of Massillon; 25 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family, as well as everyone fortunate enough to have known her friendship.
