Erwin Bartel

Dalton - Erwin Bartel, age 76, passed away at his home on Friday, September 25, 2020 after a brief illness due to pancreatic cancer. He was born in Stuttgart, Germany on May 12, 1944 to the late Ewald and Lydia Bartel.

 In 1949, a Mennonite Church in Kansas sponsored the family to make a new home in the United States. Later the family moved to northeast Ohio. Erwin graduated from Orrville High School in 1962 and then served his country for two years in the 1-W Service in Indianapolis. He married Linda S. (Stauffer) on September 2, 1967 at Salem Mennonite Church in Wooster where they were active for many years. They lived and raised their children in Dalton.

 In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Mark (Laura) Bartel of Twinsburg, Heidi Schlabach of Dalton, and Lawrence (Amy) Bartel of Oxford; his sister, Nely (Larry) Harris of Wooster; eleven grandchildren, Meg Bartel, Sam Bartel, Evan Bartel, Jack Bartel, Nate Bartel, Meredith Bartel, Justina Schlabach, Latrice Schlabach, Jaden Schlabach, Jens Bartel, and Lydia Bartel.  Erwin worked in Research and Development at Crown Divisions in Wooster for many years. Later he enjoyed working with the students, staff, and faculty in the dining services at the College of Wooster. He thrived in making a good invention even better through his own ingenuity. He cherished long distance bicycle rides and hikes. He created indelible memories boating and fishing with family and friends. He cultivated a lifelong commitment to peacemaking and learning which he deepened as a volunteer at Camp Echoing Hills.

Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2020 at 3 p.m. at Salem Mennonite Church, 3363 Zuercher Rd., Dalton, OH 44618 with Pastor Kevin Himes officiating.  Burial will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery at Salem Mennonite Church in Wooster. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Erwin’s honor to Mennonite Central Committee at MCC, PO Box 500, Akron, PA 17501-0500.  Online obituary and guest registry are available at www.zakmonbarrenfh.com
