Gary Hilbert Fleming Sr., dedicated and loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away in his sleep at home in Doylestown, OH on Thursday, October 13, 2022.
Gary was born in Marshallville, OH on October 19, 1937 to Harold and Mabel (Markley) Fleming. He had eight siblings and attended school in Orrville. Gary joined the USMC and proudly served our country for 6 years. He met and married his wife, Carol (Wright) Fleming on June 8, 1957. Soon after, they welcomed their first child, Louann. In short order, they grew to a family of six with the births of Cathryn, Seth, and Gary Jr.
Gary and Carol called Doylestown their home for their entire married life. He had a 45-year career working at the Packaging Corporation in Rittman. Through the years, Gary loved his family and friends. After retirement, he enjoyed annual snowbird trips to Tybee Island, GA where he had so many wonderful friends. He also enjoyed mowing as a part-time job. He was a member of the Doylestown American Legion Post #407 and the Rittman Moose Lodge #860. Gary became a grandfather (Papap) in 1981 and ultimately had five grandchildren, all of whom he adored. Later in life, he was lucky enough to be proud of nine great-grandchildren. Gary was a gem of all gems, with a very big heart and unmatched wit and humor. He will be missed by his family and friends forever.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Carol; son, Seth; great-grandson, Cade; his eight siblings, Marjean, Irene, Ann, Raymond, Charles, Susan, Wayne, and Sandra; and good buddies, Walter “Smitty” Smith and Mike Taylor. Gary is survived by his children, Louann Fleming, Cathryn (Norman) Carpenter, and Gary Fleming Jr.; grandchildren, Aubrey (Jason), Seth (Lisa), Joseph, Mallory (Mike) and Jase; great-grandchildren, Ella, Owen, Kinslee, Clara, Daniel, Ellie, Natalie, Jax, and Jasper; and many dear friends.
Our sincere thanks and gratitude go out to the loving caregivers at Crossroads Hospice and Summa GRU, and also to his very caring neighbors, Ron and Kay Dannemiller and Jamie Petit.
At his request, there will be no services. A gathering to celebrate his life will be held in the springtime. Memorial donations may be made to the Doylestown American Legion Post #407, 49 Black Dr, Doylestown, OH 44230 and Rittman Moose Lodge #860, 12527 Sheets Rd., Rittman, OH 44270.
