H. Sonya Gatrell

DALTON – H. Sonya Gatrell, age 83, passed away on June 23, 2022 at LifeCare Hospice in Wooster. She was born on December 4, 1938 in East Liverpool to the late Howard N. Sr. and Helen E. (Allison) Boals. She was a life resident of Dalton and a graduate of Dalton High School. Sonya was a certified LPN and retired from Dunlap Hospital after having also worked at Shady Lawn Nursing Home and Massillon Hospital. She was a member of Dalton United Methodist Church and the Sons of Herman social club. She was an avid reader, but her passion was singing, and she was a long-time member of the City of Flags Chorus of Sweet Adelines.

Sonya is survived by Les, her husband of 50 years; children, Wendie (Al) Berry of Massillon, Laurel Essig of Fairborn, Julie (Rick) Farelli of Massillon, David Wertz of Columbus, Scott (Cara) Gatrell of Jupiter, FL, Todd (Sarah) Wertz of Dalton; 13 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and brother, Skip (Shanna) Boals of Eustace, TX.

A graveside service with inurnment to follow will be held at a later date at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Dalton Park on Mill Street on July 16th from 3 pm to 6 pm. Online obituary and guest registry are available at www.zakmonbarrenfh.com
