Harry Weibel Obituary

DALTON - Harry Weibel, 90, of Dalton, Ohio, hung up his walking shoes and reflective jacket on January 15, 2025 and met Jesus Christ his Savior.

He was an Akron native born to Harry and Ruth and welcomed by his older sister Jean. In his youth, Harry could be found spending time with friends and cousins at the local YMCA.

Harry moved to Barberton, Ohio in his teens and graduated from Barberton High School. He completed his Education degree at Bluffton College where he was a standout member of their championship football teams in the mid 1950’s. While at Bluffton his crowning life achievement was meeting his lifelong love, Allene. They married in 1960 after Harry served in the U.S. Army at Fort Knox. Harry and Allene moved to Galion, Ohio where Harry took a job teaching and coaching football.

Harry was a natural artist and gifted with creativity. He and Allene moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he earned a degree in Graphic Arts, with a specialization in advertising, from the Cooper School of Art. He and Allene welcomed sons Mark and John during this phase of their marriage and eventually moved to upstate New York where Harry took a teaching job in Sackets Harbor. The family later moved to Columbus, Indiana where he and Allene served as “house parents” at the Bartholemew County Children’s Home. Their third son, Andrew, was born and Harry earned a Master’s degree in Art Education from Indiana University.

The Weibel family moved to Kidron, Ohio in 1971, when Harry took an advertising job eventually settling in Dalton during the “blizzard of ‘77.” Harry was an active member of the Dalton United Methodist Church serving as head usher, Sunday school teacher, and a member of the outreach ministries. Harry often visited residents at a nearby nursing home on Sunday mornings before church.

Harry’s love of nature led the family on camping trips all over the United States. He had a knack for packing everything needed for the trip with just enough room for the boys in the back seat. He found peace and enjoyment in his kayak and canoe in his later years, often exploring the Portage Lakes. Harry remained physically active throughout his life and walked throughout Dalton in the early morning hours of most days.

Harry was an outstanding husband, father, and grandfather. He found great joy in his family with special emphasis on his grandchildren and their lives and activities. Harry was quiet and kind to everyone he met. He was filled with gratitude his entire life and will be remembered for his humility, easy laugh, sweet tooth, love of peanut butter, dedication to family, honesty, warm demeanor, conversational attitude, and open-handed waves.

He was preceded in death by sister Jean (Chuck) Newberry, nephew Charles (Terri) Newberry, and niece Becky (Bob) Kelly. Surviving in addition to loving wife, Allene, are his three sons, six grandchildren, two nieces, a nephew, and two sisters-in-law.

The family of Harry Weibel would like to extend gratitude to the many nurses in the Palliative Care Unit at Akron Summa Hospital and Haley, his daily caretaker.
