Jack L. Downs

DOYLESTOWN – Jack L. Downs, age 94, passed away on December 7, 2022 at his home surrounded by family. Born on September 19, 1928 to the late Russell and Kathryn Downs at home in Albany, OH, he graduated from Rushville Union High School in 1946. Jack was drafted into the U.S. Army and served from 1950 to 1952 in the Korean War and was sent to the 4th Infantry Division to stand strong “at all costs” against the Russian Communist threat to Western Europe. He was a Staff Sergeant and was 2nd in command over 5 tanks. Jack worked at Seiberling Tire and Rubber Co. (33 yrs.), Wooster Country Club (golf course maintenance – 17 yrs.), Chippewa Golf Course, and maintenance at Zion Lutheran Church. He loved baseball and proudly told of trying out for the Boston Braves and Brooklyn Dodgers. He coached Little League, American Legion, Wayne County Hot Stove, and helped to coach Doylestown High School baseball. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Doylestown American Legion Post #407. Jack enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren in all of their activities.

Preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy, he leaves behind his children, Becky (Rick) Petry, Don (Ann) Downs, Bill (Shawnee) Downs; grandchildren, Sarah (Bryan) Janiga, Matt Petry (Briana Huebner), Michael (Erin), Jonathan (Jennifer), Kathleen, Joseph (Ashley), Katie (fiancé, Zachary Croftcheck) Downs, Rich (fiancée, Melissa Tindall), Ray, and Rob Downs; great grandchildren, Myles, Cora, Gavin, Josie, Carter, Lola, Hunter, Makenzie, Alexander, Natalie, Tolan, Jaxon, Dominic, and Olivia; other family and friends.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at 11 a.m. at Zak-Thacker & Monbarren Funeral Home, 132 N. Portage St., Doylestown, OH, 44230 with Deacon Dale Youngblood, officiating. Burial with military honors will take place at Chestnut Hill Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church, P.O.
