Martha Kandel Obituary

DALTON - Martha E. Kandel, age 82, passed away on May 10, 2026.

Born on February 3, 1944, in Plain City, Ohio, to Daniel and Edna (Schlabach) Troyer, Martha was a graduate of Lake High School in Hartville, Ohio, and a resident of Dalton since the early 1960's. Working for years alongside her beloved husband LeRoy, she was the bookkeeper for his trucking business and a homemaker. She enjoyed many things including puzzles, traveling, and working in her flower gardens, and she especially enjoyed watching and feeding the birds and squirrels. Her most precious time, though, was with her family from gatherings around meals after water fights to playing on the floor with grandchildren to chatting with her siblings to faithfully praying over us. While she was still able, each Wednesday morning Martha could be found talking and laughing at a local restaurant with a close group of friends and sisters-in-law that we fondly named the Breakfast Gang. Martha was a member of Pleasant View Mennonite Church where she was active with many of the church functions.

Martha is preceded in death by her husband LeRoy J. Kandel and her son Buford Kandel. She is survived by her daughters, Corene (Dustin Shilling) Kandel of Rittman, and Danelle (John) Young of Alma, AR, and daughter-in-law, Sheri Kandel; cherished grandchildren, Nikole (Richard) Poole, Ashley (Alex) Hege, Diedra (Brandon) Mickle, Kaitlyn (Andrew) Kowiki, Wyatt Jasper, Alexis Glessner, Tristan (Cortney) Ramsey, and Shelby (Zach) Jones; and seven amazing great grandchildren.

Martha is survived by six sisters, Susie (late Ray) Schlabach, Dorothy (late Bill) Slabaugh, Verna (Merle) Headings, Esther (late Marvin) Beachy, Emma (late Ray) Keim, Miriam (Don) Russell; one brother, Ralph (Velma) Troyer; and numerous nieces, nephews, family, and friends. Martha was preceded in death by her parents, sister Katie Alice, and brothers Adin, Marvin, and Alvin Troyer.
