Matthew S. Mertic

DOYLESTOWN - Matthew S. Mertic, age 35, passed away unexpectedly on May 3, 2022 while on a Mississippi River Boat Cruise with his mother. 

Born on March 2,1987 in Barberton, OH he was a Chippewa Township resident all his life.

Matt graduated from Chippewa High School in 2007 and was the first person with Down Syndrome to graduate from Chippewa. He was a manager of the football team while in high school. Matt was also a member of Boy Scout Troop 123 in Doylestown and achieved the Rank of 1st Class Scout and earned his 5th Year Pipestone Award. Matt also won first place in the Wayne-Holmes Soapbox Derby, Challenger Division in 1999. Matt also enjoyed volunteering at Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens at Christmas time. Over the last decade, Matt and his mother traveled frequently in the US and Canada as well as Eastern Europe, Scotland, Costa Rica and many Caribbean Cruises.

Preceded in death by his father, Louis Mertic and grandparents, he is survived by his mother, Mary Mertic of Chippewa Township; brothers John (Kristy) and their children, Mallory, Carter, Yin Bai and Zarah of Doylestown, David (Blake) children Aspen and Maverick of New Franklin; many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at 11 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 161 W. Clinton St., Doylestown with Fr. Peter Morris, Celebrant. Inurnment will be in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church or Boy Scouts of America, Great Trail Council, 4500 Hudson Drive, Stow, OH, 44224, or Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, 714 N. Portage Path, Akron, OH, 44303.
