SMITHVILLE – Pluma J. “Joe” Smith, age 85, passed away February 4, 2026.
Born on June 27, 1940 in Jackson County, WV to the late Romie and Florence (Pickens) Burgess, she had been a resident of Smithville for many years, previously of Doylestown. She retired from the Nabisco Co. in Seville, OH after 23 years of service and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Rittman, OH. Pluma loved to spend time outdoors. She especially enjoyed hunting deer, squirrel, and turkey and also liked to spend time canning food.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Willie “Frank” Smith; daughter, Alesha “Lisa” Smith; 6 brothers, and 3 sisters. She is survived by her children, Vicki (Robert) Knotts, Mary (Timothy) Hout, both of Doylestown, Cynthia Mitchell of Wooster, and James (Gina) Smith of Smithville; grandchildren, Joseph Mitchell, Jessica Smith, Krista Reed, Rachel Head, Michael Hanna, Adam Smith, Austin Smith, Katie Workman, Crystal Middleton, Alissa Myers, Josh Hout, Brittany Hout, Marissa Reed, Chris Knotts; many great grandchildren; sister, Doris Moore of Ravenswood, WV; numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Funeral service will be Thursday, February 12, 2026 at 11 a.m. at the Zak-Thacker & Monbarren Funeral Home, 132 N. Portage St., Doylestown, OH, 44230. Burial will follow at Smithville Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family c/o the funeral home.
