Robert (Bob) T. Slates

DALTON - Robert (Bob) T. Slates, age 73, passed away after a short illness on August 1, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. 

Born on May 29, 1951, in Canton, OH, to the late Donald H. “Pete” and Bernice L. (Riegle) Slates, he was a long-time resident of Dalton.  Bob retired from FirstMerit Bank after many years of dedicated service. Known for his warm personality and unwavering positivity, Bob embraced life with a remarkable attitude and resilience regardless of the challenges he faced. His sociable nature and love for conversation made him a cherished friend to many. Bob looked forward to his annual fishing trips to Canada and treasured the times spent fishing and playing cards at Piedmont Lake. 

Throughout his life, Bob was an active community member—serving as a Cub Scout leader, member of the Lions Club, working as an auctioneer, and maintaining a 50-year membership with Cedar Lodge #430 in Orrville.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his son, Brian. He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Carol; his children, Kristy (Jerrod) Yochum of North Lawrence and Matt (Brandy) Slates of Avon Lake, OH; grandchildren, Isabella and Brayden Yochum, and Lily, Evan, and Noelle Slates; his sister, Diana (Rick) Locke of Carrollton, OH; as well as other family and many friends.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to family and friends for the support and kindness received during this difficult time. A special thanks to hospice for the care and compassion provided. 

Funeral service will be held on Monday, August 5, 2024 at 11:30 a.m. at Zak-Thacker & Monbarren Funeral Home, 29 E. Main St., Dalton, OH, 44618 with Pastor Rod Grabski, officiating.  Burial to follow at Dalton Cemetery.  Calling hours will be one hour prior to service time on Monday.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ohio’s Hospice LifeCare, 1900 Akron Rd., Wooster, OH, 44691 or the MS Society, 6133 Rockside Rd., Suite 208, Independence, OH 44131.  Online obituary and guest registry are available at  www.zakmonbarrenfh.com
