S. Allene Weibel Obituary

S. Allene Weibel, 88, of Dalton, Ohio, joined her husband and lifelong love, Harry Weibel, in Heaven on April 3, 2025.

She was born and raised in Trail, Ohio by Frank and Irene Kendle. Growing up, she could be found singing in the choir with her two sisters, Janice and Myrna, and hitting home runs during recess at Trail School House—which earned her the nickname “Butch.”

Allene graduated from Walnut Creek High School and pursued higher education at Goshen College. She then transferred to Bluffton College where she met Harry. Allene knew he was the one when he borrowed his step-father’s car and drove across Ohio to visit her at Bluffton—only to realize Allene was at home in Holmes County. They married in 1960 and moved to Galion, Ohio.

However, this was not the last stop. Allene and Harry, along with their son Mark, moved to Cleveland, Ohio where they welcomed son John. After a short stint in Sackets Harbor, New York, they moved to Columbus, Indiana so Harry could continue his studies at Indiana University. There, Allene took on the role as “house mother” at the Bartholomew County Children’s Home in addition to raising her own children. Before leaving Columbus, their third son, Andrew, was born.

When the Weibel family moved back to Ohio in 1971, neighbors were impressed with Allene because she could parallel park an eight-person VW bus with her eyes closed. She had plenty of practice as “taxi driver,” bringing her boys to football and baseball games and slinging PB&J sandwiches to the backseat on countless road trips.

They eventually settled in Dalton in 1977 and added another girl to the family: Allene’s beloved dog Scheina. Allene was an active member of the Dalton United Methodist Church, singing in the choir every Sunday and contributing to various outreach programs in the church and community. Allene’s voice was missed on the handful of days she caught a cold.

After corralling her three boys and sending them off to college, Allene courageously worked where few women had worked before: in the service department at a local automotive dealership. The teasing from her male coworkers quickly subsided when Allene proved she could master the parts catalog, run the office, and learn the ins and outs of the auto industry—all while making the best pot of coffee.

Though Allene traveled across the U.S., Holmes County never left her. She was an avid auction-goer, bringing home antique furniture, paintings, and—her most treasured belongings— wicker baskets. True to her family’s Mennonite roots, Allene also quilted and baked her world-renowned buttermilk cookies, often for fundraising events in the community.

Especially later in life, Allene and Harry had season tickets to Dalton High School sports, cheering the Bulldogs from the stands at almost every football and basketball game. Neighbors could always find Allene and Harry out on their back porch on sunny spring and summer days.

Allene was an extraordinary wife, mother, grandmother, and end of life caregiver. Her love for her family, friends, and community had no bounds. She cared deeply about her faith, which she expressed not only through her words but her actions. She will be remembered for her contagious laugh, generous spirit, and enduring love.

She was preceded in death by her husband Harry Weibel and infant brother Rex Kendle.  Surviving are her two sisters, three sons, six grandchildren, two nieces, and a nephew.
